Given the specifications, I doubt that this lens will match the 24-70 F4's IQ at any focal length, for starters the older lens takes larger filters (72 vs 67), suggesting at the very least, better corners at the wide end especially at large apertures. I see the 24-200 as an f/8+ lens.
Tamron wide open at 200 2.8 is sharper than Nikon 70-200/4 VR at f4. I am replacing the holly trinity Nikon with Tamrons, so far I have the 15-30 VC and 70-200 VC, I don't feel like I need a 24-70 anymore, just a 50mm prime in between is okay. The 24-70 f/4 is a wonderful lens. People have a tendency to dismiss it because it is available as the "kit" lens which traditionally are not that good. In this case, I'm amazed by what we are getting with the Z system. Both of the S lens trounce the F-mount versions and the new f/2.8 is sharper than the f/4 version wide open AND at f/4.
